RELAY England
'A Musical Relay'
Saturday 19th June 1993
Stoke Newington - 2:13 Club, Vortex Jazz Club, Rose and Crown Pub
It all began as a way of circumventing the British Music Licensing Laws. A Music Licence is required for all places where more than two musicians are performing (this exception was made to allow the pub tradition of folk singing along with a piano player). Duos set up in three places, and whenever one of the other musicians came in and started playing, someone had to leave. It was legally imperative that no more than two were playing at any one time.
Ivor Kallin - viola
Julia Doyle - double bass
Nick Lubran - guitar
Ntshuks Bonga - sax
Dave Fowler - drums
Lester Moses - sax
David Holmes - trumpet
Sue Ferrar - violin
Caroline Kraabel - sax
Noel Taylor - clarinet
Relay II
Sunday 19th June 1994
2:13 Club, Vortex Jazz Club, St.Mary's Church Hall
Regardless of the legality, we played in trios, and had three drummers, so they didn't have to keep dismantling and trundling their kits.
Sarah Allen - flute
John Bisset - guitar
John Edwards - double bass
Pam Elliott - guitar
Sue Ferrar - violin
Dave Fowler - drums
David Holmes - trumpet
Ivor Kallin - viola
Caroline Kraabel - sax
Lester Moses - sax
Maggie Nicols - voice
Caroline Taylor - drums
Simon Waterford - drums
For subsequent relays musicians made a self-portrait for the promotional fliers:
